Keep Checking Back for Xbox 360

Today, a couple of us spent a good deal of the day today pouring over feedback from forums and blogs.  There are a couple of particularly nasty rumors that I’d love to address.  I know Molly continues to work with the mainstream press, so you should expect news stories to continue.

Recall Rumors are 100% False: The nastiest RUMOR that’s making the rounds is that Microsoft is going to do some sort of a recall of the Xbox 360.  Several forum threads I’ve seen are talking about folks going into retailers, only to be told that there will be no more units coming because of a Microsoft recall.  NOT TRUE!   If you're told this by a retailer, let me know.

Replenishment Units Are On The Ground: Also, there are reports of some retailers saying they won’t have units for weeks or months.  Also not true (in most cases).  My theory is that some people might be tired of the constant calls, so they’ve made something up to get people to quit calling.  We are shipping units constantly (we have chartered 747’s regularly flying in with units).  Some retailers have a backorder wait list, and might not have units that will be on shelf for some time, and some retailers might allocate more units to one store over another, but all stores that have placed orders are getting replenishments regularly.

In fact, we have confirmation that units are on the ground and on their way to retailers this week.  When those will go from our warehouses to retailer warehouses, then to retailer locations is largely up to those retailers, so there’s no easy way to say which store will get product on which day.  You should call your local retailer to find out. We remain on track to ship 2.75 to 3.0 million consoles in the first 90 days.

Hardware Replacements in as Few as 5-7 Days: I saw a couple of posts where people with problems were postponing calling 800-4MYXBOX.  Not sure if it’s because of long wait times (now the rush of launch is beginning to die down, those are diminishing), or that they think they might be weeks without a console.  Truth is that we’re turning around replacement/repaired units extremely quickly, in as few as 5-7 business days.  Our support reps have been trained to troubleshoot your problems over the phone.  When a return is necessary, we overnight a prepaid box to you, which allows you to overnight your console back to us.  In most cases, we troubleshoot/repair/replace your Xbox 360 in 1-2 days, and we overnight it back.  We planned for world-class customer satisfaction, and have plenty of consoles, parts, and trained employees to handle the volume.

We're Not Holding Back: I’m continue to see comments/questions about Microsoft holding back inventory to keep the price inflated/keep hype going.  We have shipped every console we’ve made, and we’re making more as fast as we can.  Fact is, there is significantly more demand than supply, and will be for some time.  We’re all gamers, and we all understand how frustrating it is to wait.  We’re doing all we can to get Xbox 360 controllers into the hands of those that have waited so long.  But believe me when I say, we aren't holding units, and we're not creating hype for hype's sake.  There's no good economic justification for that (but that's the subject for another blog post...).

That's it for now...

For goodness sakes THANK YOU for this post. There is so much bad info out
there right now. Major Nelson's post about replenisment got some good run
but the more truth that can get out there, the better. As for me - I am
enjoying my 360. To be honest I did have it freeze on me last night as I
started Madden football. I reset the machine and it worked fine. That is
the first time it froze on me in about 20 hours of gaming.

Thanks again for getting this update out!

I can speak from my experience after having to ship my original Xbox away after a hardware failure that the process was a breeze. Once the techs recognized the problem, a box appeared at our doorstep the following day and I had my Xbox returned to me literally within a week. Given that we live on an Island and shipping can usually take a while to and from – I was blown away at fast it came back. The automated communication at various points in the process helped a lot to reassure me that progress was being made.

The problem I was having was a rare glitch related to the network card so initially it took a few calls to troubleshoot. Those that are experiencing "known" issues should have no problems. The key is picking up the phone immediately instead of wasting days sitting around complaining about it.

Thank you so much for answering all these questions and clearing up so many issues/rumors. I would like to inform you of one thin that occured today. I live in Stamford CT. I have been going on a daily basis to Best buy and Circuit City in Norwalk. I happenned to visit Best Buy today and they informed me that "the Xbox guy was here" and that he said that they were doing a recall. Now I confronted on what this lady was telling me by saying that Larry Hrib had already officialy announced that a recall was not planned. She arrogantly said "well if you know so much, why are you asking me? You don't want to believe me? Then good luck and good bye". Now I know they are under a lot of pressure, but per what you wrote, I am informing you that Best Buy in Norwalk Ct is informing their clients of a recall. i want to thank you one last time for taking the time to clear up these rumors. Victory to Microsoft and XBOX!!

Thanks so much. Finally, info from an official source. I was sick of all the
rumors on the forums.

Posted by: at Nov 29, 2005 5:51:22 PM

I appreciate the information.
Can you explain how it is that retailers in my area are still saying it will be the week before Christmas (if we're lucky) that they get more 360s on their shelves--and when they get them (they claim) they'll be getting very small numbers (20 at the Best Buy in Spokane, Wa.)?
I have the money to buy a 360. I even bought Call of Duty 2 already, for fear IT might sell out by the time a 360 is available for me to purchase. I only need to find the retailer who admits when they'll be selling them. That's the hard part.
Thanks again for the info.

thank you so much for putting out true info and shutting down a majority or the rumors we as gamers really appreiciate it. I am very relieved after reading your post. Thanks again.

Good info. I have been worn down by stores in my area telling me I "won't get one of those 'til March" (FYE) or that the next shipment is in "either 30 or 60 days" (Best Buy) or that 360 is due "we're hoping January" (Wal-Mart).

In fact, now that I think about it, I'm going to print out John's blog entry here and take copies of it around with me next time I do a Disappointment Drive around all the stores. Because no matter what the truth is, these sales people drumming "next year" into your head is deflating.

I only hope enough units are in this shipment to give some of us a chance who aren't willing or able to be at local stores at 6 am on shipment day.

FYI, since you ask, my local Toys R Us (Hamden, CT) reported the recall story to me yesterday when I went to check for stock. "They didn't take the time to iron out the bugs" the sales guy told me, before suggesting I try eBay. Before launch day, the same store told me they wouldn't be opening early on the 22nd, it'd be business as usual, 9 am, first come first served. We visited at 7 am and found a note saying they'd all been sold at 6 am. Upsetting.

Posted by: Ayton at Nov 29, 2005 6:35:26 PM

Yeah, that doesn't really explain why Microsoft had such a half-assed launch, with glitches and such huge shortages, even though there are large amounts of time to spare before the PS3 comes out.

Posted by: Zack at Nov 29, 2005 6:59:27 PM

I think one of the real problems is lack of communication with the retailers and their employees. Management has no idea or doesn't bother to inform the employee when they might be able to get more stock. I mean come on, It's not that hard to say that it is a best guess and not and exact date, but most retailers shake their head and tell you that you would be lucky if you see any before Christmas or January.
EB games and Walmart who incidently is one of your launch PARTNERS has no idea when they might be getting any and their answers range from check back to check back next year. MS has to do more due dilligence to find out what the managment team of their retail partners is doing to inform the customer and make the customer aware that there are units on the way before next year. Thanks

U said tell u if any stores are calling recalls. . .well my and my friend just called best buy and walmart and they said there back-ordered because of the recall

Can Microsoft do anything about retailers gouging customers by charging 2x+ msrp on the 360. JC Penny is doing this on their online site and atomicpark.com is selling premium by itself for $899. I understand ebay and the free p2p marketplace (hey this is America right), but doesn't Microsoft have any control over the big retailers it supplies? Atomicpark is pretty bad about this as they claimed to have secured 800 units for delivery starting tomorrow and 2000 units for delivery starting 12/12. How can they get this many from Microsoft and turn around and totally gouge the public and reduce sales (by reducing available cash) of accessories (profit to you) and games (profit to game makers/ and you). Can't Microsoft cut supply to retailers who are gouging customers and hurting the sales by game companies who stepped up to the bat and supported the launch.

Posted by: Al at Nov 29, 2005 7:45:08 PM

I think Al said a mouth full with his post. I don't mind waiting for a quality product but getting gouged is another thing. Someone in marketing should have a sense of control over this, some how, some way. It's to bad when the gamers it was built for can't get their hands on it because some retailers are practing these kind of tactics. These are the kind of retailers that show up after a Huricane and offer to sell you a bag of ice for $25. Ask me how I know !
And some of the hard core thievery on eBay just shows "Man Kind" at his worst.
With that said, I'm looking forward to the 360 when and if I ever get my hands on one :)

When will they reach the stores....(seeing that the stores that I call and go to and etc say there are none coming at all)

Posted by: Isaac (Harold) at Nov 29, 2005 10:23:14 PM

and also...is there any chance that the Black Xbox 360 being released with that shipment?

Posted by: Isaac (Harold) at Nov 29, 2005 10:32:35 PM

I just thought I'd tell you this since you asked. The Wal-Mart where I live, Port Orchard WA, told me MS is doing recalls and they don't know when any Xbox 360's will be out. I know that's not true but I was pissed they told me that. I'm checking places daily hoping they'll get some in, but when they say things like that....Well, just not good. Thanks

Tom

Gee, you need to work with retailers to provide better information and to stop the price gouging that is going on.

I was told so many times "not until March", I was starting to doubt.

Also, store employees have been involved in all sorts of activities that tarnish Microsoft's image and reputation. Between open boxes (because someone wanted to try it in the back-room) and eBay flipping, real gamers have felt cheated.

Why don't you guys open a Web site and sell directly to consumers? Even at a premium, it would be more fair than relying on greedy individuals to do the job.

I actually heard the recall rumor from a new CompUSA employee near Chicago on Sunday. I was surprised to hear this news first from someone working at CompUSA, but figured that it had to be a rumor. Thanks for the "official" word!

I had a Best Buy employee in the Hebron, OH area tell me there was a recall. The Columbus, OH area Best Buys are also planning on doing a "re-launch" when they get more in. They told me they are not just putting them on the shelves and have "first come first served" but will do another number hand out and place a note on the doors of the stores when that day will happen.

Posted by: Kevin at Nov 30, 2005 4:09:08 AM

How many of those 2.75 to 3 million in the first 90 days are coming to the U.S.?

And it is a shame that scalpers have been able to hoard thousands of 360's. Could MS offering direct sales have thwarted the price gouging and get the 360's into the hands of us who really want to keep one?

Posted by: Pete L at Nov 30, 2005 6:34:12 AM

Sorry... one more question: Does the 2.75 to 3 million shipping teh first 90 days incude the initial launch shipments? If it does, tht does not leave much "replenishment" for the first month, does it?
